Can I visit Tibet as an independent tourist?

Independent foreign tourist travel to Tibet is not permitted.

You must book an organized tour and apply for special Tibet travel permit.

Start permit applications well in advance, processing takes time.

You cannot simply take a train or flight to Lhasa on your own.

Permit checks happen at transport terminals heading into Tibet.
