Best eSIM for China with unlimited data

Has anyone actually used one of these? Any solid eSIM recommendations with a high data allowance? I know true “unlimited” data eSIMs do not really exist, but a guy can dream!

When picking an eSIM with “unlimited data” for China, the key thing to understand is how data roaming and the Great Firewall work.

Firewall bypass

Travel eSIMs can route internet traffic through Hong Kong, Singapore or Europe. In many cases this means Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube work without a separate VPN.

The “unlimited” reality

Almost every unlimited travel eSIM has a Fair Usage Policy. You typically get high-speed data, for example 3–5 GB per day or 5G speeds, after which the connection may slow to 128 kbps–1 Mbps for the rest of the day.

Popular unlimited-data options

1. Holafly — for heavy phone users**Holafly is well known for duration-based unlimited plans in China.

  • Pros:** Flexible 1–90 day durations, China Mobile network coverage and simple firewall bypass.
  • Cons: Expensive; heavy use can trigger throttling; hotspot limits apply on some plans.
  • Best for: Social-media users, video streamers and travelers who prefer buying by trip length rather than monitoring GB.

2. Saily — value and built-in privacy**Created by the team behind NordVPN, Saily offers high-speed unlimited options with security-focused routing.

  • Pros:** Good app experience, secure infrastructure, firewall bypass and personal-hotspot support.
  • Cons: Longer unlimited stays can get pricey.
  • Best for: Travelers looking for a balance of security, speed and support.

3. Airalo — a reliable backup**Airalo offers unlimited daily packages or larger fixed data pools such as 20–50 GB.

  • Pros:** Beginner-friendly app, stable local coverage and hotspot tethering.
  • Cons: Daily unlimited rates can be higher than bulk-GB plans.
  • Best for: First-time eSIM users who need reliable tethering for laptops or tablets.

Before you buy

  • Download and scan the eSIM QR code before landing while you still have home Wi-Fi.
  • If you plan to work on a laptop, check whether your exact plan permits tethering. Some Holafly plans restrict it, while Saily and Airalo may allow it.
  • For maps, Didi, Alipay and messaging, a large fixed plan such as Nomad or Airalo 20–50 GB can be cheaper and provide unthrottled 5G speeds.
