"Weird" things to notice while traveling in China?

Hello! I'm traveling to china next month and I have a particular interest in things that are mostly common in a single country, mostly related to transport but also culture in general.

For example I love how in Japan the traffic lights are horizontally placed and have the blue color for green.

I know that in China traffic lights have countdowns and that they are synchronized with the navigation apps.

Do you know any funny "weird" things I can notice while traveling in China? I'm staying in Chongqing and nearby cities. Thank you!

Let me think. When it comes to transportation in Chongqing, there are tons of fascinating oddities.

First off, you can see light rail trains running straight through a residential apartment building. This is something you’ll barely find anywhere else in the world — that’s Liziba Station.

Then there’s the Yangtze River Cableway. It functions like a regular public transit bus for locals, not just a tourist attraction.

On top of that, Chongqing boasts one of the most complex overpass interchanges on the planet. Even with navigation turned on, drivers can easily take the wrong exit.

You’ll also constantly lose track of whether you’re standing on ground level or dozens of meters up in the air. After all, Chongqing is a city built entirely on mountains.

Beyond Chongqing: Roads across nearly all Chinese cities feel quieter compared to many foreign countries. Electric vehicles are extremely widespread here; the number of electric cars has already surpassed gasoline-powered ones.

One last tip: Download AMAP. It has an English version for navigation. You can book ride-hailing services on it, and it connects with Alipay for payments.
