Gluten free vegetarian travel guide China

A vegetarian traveller avoiding gluten and most wheat- or rice-based foods asks how realistic food planning is in China.

I'm a vegetarian, and I'm not really big on wheat- or rice-based foods either. Any food recommendations for a trip to China?

It is possible, but this combination needs more preparation than a standard vegetarian trip. Major cities have dedicated vegetarian and Buddhist-style restaurants, ranging from inexpensive buffets to higher-end places, so those are useful anchors for your itinerary.

At ordinary restaurants, vegetable and tofu dishes are common, but vegetarian does not automatically mean gluten-free or free from meat stock, lard, oyster sauce or shared cooking oil. Save a clear dietary card in Chinese and ask specifically about broth, sauces, cooking oil and wheat-based seasonings. For medically necessary gluten avoidance, do not rely on a verbal “yes” alone.

Fresh fruit, nuts, plain vegetables, tofu, eggs if you eat them, and carefully checked potato or corn dishes can help between restaurant meals. Carry dependable snacks for long train days and smaller towns, where dedicated options are less predictable.
