How early should I arrive at a Chinese high-speed rail station with luggage?

My train is domestic and I will have a suitcase. How much time should I leave for security and finding the right gate, especially if I am using a foreign passport? Is one hour excessive or sensible?

Large stations are well signed, but the last walk to the gate can take longer than expected. Build in time for a toilet, snacks and finding the correct waiting area.

For a first trip, arriving 45–60 minutes early is a comfortable habit. Keep your passport and train details together before joining the security queue.
