Advice/Tips for Shanghai (Oct 4–6) & Guilin/Yangshuo (Oct 6–9) during Golden Week? How bad will it be?

A traveller asks how to manage Shanghai, Guilin and Yangshuo during Golden Week and whether every activity and transfer needs booking in advance.

Hi everyone! I'll be travelling to China this October and am concerned about crowds because my dates overlap with Golden Week.

My itinerary is Shanghai: October 4–6; then Guilin / Yangshuo: October 6–9, with an early flight arriving in Guilin at 7:00 AM on the 6th.

How bad are Shanghai and Guilin/Yangshuo on those dates? Are attractions completely packed, or does it calm down toward the end of the holiday? Any lesser-known ways to escape the crowds? Should I pre-book every activity and transport, or leave some things spontaneous?

Those dates remain inside the busiest part of the holiday, so plan for crowds rather than expecting a clear drop-off on the 6th. Shanghai, Guilin and Yangshuo are all popular domestic destinations; the pressure often shows up first in flight seats, rail tickets, hotels, airport transfers and the best-known attractions.

Keep Shanghai simple: choose one major sight per day, start early, and leave room for neighbourhood walks, cafés and a meal rather than trying to cross the city repeatedly. In Guilin and Yangshuo, book your first hotel and essential transport in advance, then keep one lower-stakes afternoon flexible for weather and fatigue.

For a quieter feel, favour early mornings, river or village walks away from the most obvious peak-time viewpoints, and restaurants slightly away from the entrance zones. Pre-book timed-entry attractions and intercity transport; save spontaneous decisions for food, walks and small local stops.
