What is the BEST night markets in China

I keep seeing people recommend different night markets around China, but I honestly cannot figure out which one deserves the top spot.

Xi’an’s Muslim Quarter looks incredible for street food, while Chengdu seems hard to beat if you are into spicy food and late-night eats. Then there is Shenzhen’s Dongmen, which looks like a completely different kind of night-market experience.

I would love to know what it is actually like in person. Is it mostly about the food, or is the atmosphere what makes a night market worth visiting? Are there any smaller or less touristy markets that you think are even better?

If you had to pick one night market in China, which one would you recommend and what is the one food I absolutely should not miss?

That makes it tricky to give a solid recommendation. The most enjoyable night market I have ever been to is Wushan Night Market in Hangzhou — though that was many years ago. It did not have much food, but it was packed with all sorts of quirky little trinkets, and the vibe was fantastic.

China is huge, full of interesting cities, and nightlife varies wildly from region to region. Places like Chengdu and Changsha have incredibly vibrant night-time scenes with plenty of atmospheric night markets. I have not visited them myself; I have only seen clips on short-form video apps. Meanwhile, Hangzhou and cities further south tend to have comparatively tamer nightlife.

Still, pretty much every Chinese city has at least one fun night market. It is sort of a local cultural staple.
