Do I need a tourist visa to visit mainland China in 2026?
I’m a US citizen planning a trip this autumn. I’ve seen conflicting posts online about visa rules. Trying to figure out if I can fly in without applying for a tourist visa beforehand. Don’t want to waste money on applications if there’s an exemption.

You still need a tourist visa. Don’t mix up transit visa-free with regular tourist entry, they are not the same.

I applied three months back, processing took around a week through the consulate.

Double check, only certain nations get mutual visa-free access, USA is not on that list.

Make sure you prepare hotel bookings and rough travel plan for your visa submission.

If you only have a short layover and leave to another country you might qualify for transit scheme.
